Heritage Sandstone Facade — Graffiti Removed Without Stone Damage
Three tags on a heritage-listed Sydney sandstone facade removed cleanly without acid wash or pressure washing. No ghosting, no mortar damage.
Three tags on a heritage-listed Sydney sandstone facade removed cleanly without acid wash or pressure washing. No ghosting, no mortar damage.
The brief
A typical brief in this category: a heritage-listed sandstone facade hit by spray-paint taggers over a long weekend. Three tags across roughly 40m² of weathered sandstone. Council heritage rules prohibit acid wash, pressure washing or chemical strippers. The conservator’s advisory is clear: dry ice, or chip-and-replace stone (the latter prohibitively expensive on listed work).
Engagement starts with a sample-area test request from the heritage architect — standard process for listed work.
The work
Sample test. Before any work is scoped, run a 0.5m² sample on an inconspicuous lower corner. Conservator and heritage architect on site to inspect. Pressure tuned at 50-60 PSI with a 60-degree fan nozzle. Paint lifts cleanly — sandstone surface unmolested. Sign-off issued before the main work proceeds.
Main work. Three tags worked in sequence over a single day. Lower-pressure technique throughout — heritage stone is more forgiving than paint or steel for this kind of cleaning, but the surface texture must be preserved exactly.
Documentation. Pre / during / post photos at every 1m² grid square. Conservator typically visits once during the work and once at sign-off.
The result
In this scenario, all three tags remove cleanly. No ghosting visible from a normal viewing distance — and on close inspection, the original sandstone weathering pattern is preserved. Mortar joints intact. The documentation pack supports heritage architect sign-off and council records.
This is exactly the kind of work we are set up to deliver for council heritage cleaning panels and conservation architects — the documentation discipline matters as much as the cleaning technique.
