Is the asset critical infrastructure where outage is costly or risky?

Live-cleaning of switchgear, motors and substation equipment under your safety case. No shutdown, no water, IR readings preserved.
Live-cleaning of switchgear, motors and substation equipment under your safety case. No shutdown, no water, IR readings preserved.
Your switchgear, motors and substation equipment need cleaning — but shutdown costs are eye-watering, and water or solvent introduces risk to insulation. Compressed air just drives contamination deeper. Dry ice is non-conductive and non-abrasive: with appropriate procedures, equipment can be cleaned during operation. Insulation resistance preserved. Cooling fins clean. Operating temperatures lower. Asset life extended. We work to your safety case, with your electrical authority, and produce per-asset IR-test documentation for your asset register.
Pain points we hear most
- Shutdowns for cleaning cost six figures in lost capacity
- Water and solvent compromise insulation health
- Compressed air relocates dust rather than removing it
- Asset register documentation requires structured records
- High-voltage operator coordination is a workflow constraint
What you're looking for
- Live-cleaning capability under appropriate safety case
- IR-test before/after for asset register
- Coordination with HV authority
- Per-asset documentation (photo log + IR readings)
- Annual scheduling commitment
Is dry ice live-cleaning right for this asset?
A safety-first decision tree for electrical maintenance.
Does dust loading correlate with insulation-resistance reduction (annual IR test trending down)?
Will an outage be scheduled anyway for other maintenance?
Live dry ice clean with IR-test pre/post
Zero outage. IR readings improve measurably. Standard for MV switchgear and substations. Annual programme typical.
See this service →Offline dry ice during scheduled outage
Faster than live work, lower cost. Combine with regular maintenance window for best efficiency.
See this service →Monitor and re-evaluate
If IR readings are stable, defer cleaning. Re-test in 12 months and revisit.
Defer until next maintenance window
Plan dry ice cleaning into the next scheduled outage rather than triggering one for cleaning alone.
What customers like you ask before they book
Can you really clean MV switchgear live?
Yes — under your safety case, with appropriate PPE and procedures. We work to the asset owner's electrical authority. Many of our utility customers run live-clean as standard practice now to avoid shutdown cost.
How is this different from compressed air?
Compressed air relocates contamination, often driving it deeper into insulation. Dry ice physically removes contamination through thermal shock + kinetic impact + vapour expansion. IR readings actually improve after dry ice cleaning; they typically don't after compressed air.
What documentation will I get?
Per-asset photo log (pre/during/post), IR test sheet with before/after readings, cleaning record with operator sign-off. Suitable for asset register. Delivered as a structured PDF within 24 hours of close-out.
Are your operators electrically qualified?
Our crews work to your safety case. For HV work, we coordinate with your electrical authority and licensed HV operators. We don't operate beyond the agreed scope.

Sparky's FAQs
What's the typical IR improvement after cleaning?
8-15% improvement is typical when accumulated dust has been carrying surface conductivity. Some assets show much larger improvements depending on baseline contamination.
Do you carry MV-specific safety case documentation?
We work to your safety case. We can provide template procedure documents, RA frameworks and PPE specifications for your authority's review and adoption.
Is this approved for substation use?
Used routinely in substation environments under appropriate procedures. Each site has its own safety case — we work to yours.
Will it damage motor windings?
No. Pressure tuned for windings (60-80 PSI typical) — far below what would damage insulation. Pellets sublimate before they can abrade.
